Dorchester County encourages community members to participate in the 2026 Hurricane Expo and Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ashley River Park (200 Renken Road, Summerville). Participants will have the opportunity to learn about how to best prepare their homes and families for the hurricane season, while having an enjoyable day at the park.

The event will feature experts in emergency and hurricane preparedness, including National Weather Service, South Carolina Emergency Management, and Dorchester County Emergency Management. Participants will have the opportunity to meet local first responders and enjoy a “Touch-a-Truck” display of safety vehicles. There will also be other vendors available to answer questions about local services, such as the county’s mosquito abatement program, local law enforcement, animal control, and more.

This event provides valuable resources and information, especially for those who have recently moved to the Lowcountry from other parts of the state or country. Community members are invited to bring the entire family for train rides, inflatables, face painting, balloon art, and food vendors.

All ages are welcome. There is no cost for the event, but participants must pay the park admission fee of $2 per person over age three.

For media inquiries, contact Public Information Officer Erin Pomrenke at epomrenke@dorchestercountysc.gov.

@kk4nny … an emcomm trailer is a great idea … the Red Cross has a few emergency trailers in the low country, and here is some of my observations on keeping a trailer ready to use on a moments notice …. A) it needs to be checked on occasionally, low or flat tire can put a pause on everything. B) under an awning would be preferred, that pesky sun destroys idle trailers caulking, rooftops, ventilation cover on top and tires. C) routine maintenance including greasing the axles, door hinges, and hand operated jack up front. C) pests … poison the area where trailer is as fire ants love building their home at the tires and where the front foot rests. Keep at least one can of wasp spray handy. Put some mice/rat poison packets inside and out …. Those vermin just like chewing stuff for a hobby. D) the trailer needs to be pulled occasionally to excercise the tires and free up brakes and bearings. E) have a spare tire inside with a jack and chock block. Reflective vest and cones/triangle for safety. Maybe a can of fix-a-flat(I hate that stuff). F) batteries leak so remove from handhelds/flashlights (tape to device in a ziplock with blue painters tape. G) spare lightbulbs for taillights, side lights, internal etc. G) do not store anything flammable inside like spare gas or a propane tank … seeing an emergency trailer up in flames makes for a good news story …
